PROGRAM FEATURES

The ByDesign Science Student Edition is an engaging, vibrant case bound textbook intended for use in traditional and multi-grade classrooms, as well as the home-school environment. The program is organized into four units of study: Life Science, Human Body, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science. Within the program, each unit is organized into chapters containing lessons. Many opportunities to explore and experiment with science are provided throughout. The science and health content is developed through lessons that connect these concepts to your faith.

The Teacher Edition maps you through the 5-step instructional model in a detailed and consistent way. Each step in the model is clearly delineated and includes carefully and thoughtfully developed suggestions for instructional techniques and classroom questioning to invoke scientific and higher-order thinking to encourage student curiosity. The Unit Opener provides suggested questions and ideas to introduce the unit content as well as an introduction to the recommended Lifestyle Challenge. You will also find the suggested unit inquiry descriptions and support under Teach Using Inquiry. Thoughtful teacher support develops along with the student materials and wraps the reduced Student Edition for ease of reference and clear mapping of instruction. The instructional mapping includes sample answers to all questions posed in the Student Edition, including all Math in Science and Explore-a-Lab features.    

ByDesign offers several opportunities for formal assessment. To help teachers reinforce and assess student understanding of chapter objectives, each lesson is closed with a lesson summary and review and each chapter includes a comprehensive chapter test. Teachers are also provided a Unit Review that they may use as a formal summative assessment. Suggested authentic performance tasks are provided in the Teacher Edition at the close of each lesson. Students are encouraged to use scientific knowledge and practices to complete the tasks. Teachers are provided a scoring rubric for each suggested performance assessment. An inquiry that assesses students' applications of engineering practices is found in the Student Science Journal at the end of each unit of study. A scoring rubric is provided for assessment of this Structured Inquiry. 

There are many opportunities to observe and evaluate student growth and understanding during regular classroom instruction. ByDesign provides ongoing informal assessment in several ways. Think About It questions are found throughout each lesson that encourages higher-level thinking that applies the lesson content. Throughout the Teacher Edition, point-of-use boldface questions are provided which can be used to assess student understanding and application of lesson content.
